We return to the figure who launched our journey, the inimitable Sam Cooke, the same legend who we now know added the “e” at the end of his last name to make sure he stands out from the rest. Why he is still considered one of the most influential artists in music requires a look into his life.
The son of a preacher and deacon, Sam was a member of his family’s singing group that consisted of several of his brothers and sisters. Those close to him remember that he wasn’t known as the best singer of the group; one of his older brothers became famous for an outstanding voice. Even then, Sam told his other siblings that he would not work a day in his life because he would earn a living by singing; he was eight years old when he proclaimed this.
